Release Date: Friday 12 June 2026Internal Applicants OnlyApplications are invited for a part-time Industry Professorial Fellow in Artificial Intelligence for Photonics.The Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AIPT) is an internationally recognised centre for photonics research, pursuing a diverse portfolio of work at the cutting edge of high-speed optical transmission, signal processing, nonlinear photonics, lasers, bio- and medical photonics, optical sensing, and AI and machine learning in photonics. AIPT maintains strong collaborations with industrial partners and academic institutions worldwide. The Institute has recently expanded its activity in machine learning applications and is now seeking an outstanding expert in AI and machine learning to join this growing area.The successful applicant will focus on AI and machine learning research within AIPT, while contributing to the supervision and mentoring of PhD students. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in AI and machine learning, an internationally recognised research profile, and experience in applications relevant to optical communications and/or industry. They will be expected to make significant academic contributions, generate industrial impact, and support the development and supervision of postgraduate researchers.The postholder will develop a new research programme aligned with AIPT’s existing strengths, identifying synergies and collaborative opportunities across research groups, while also exploring new areas of research and emerging technologies.We are looking for candidates with a strong track record in:

  • high-quality international publications
  • invited and keynote presentations at leading conferences
  • productive collaboration between industry and academia
  • successful research partnerships
  • supervision of PhD students and/or early career researchers
  • leadership and management within academic or industrial environments
